Choosing Your State for a Happier, Healthier Life
One of the questions I’m often asked by sober coaching clients is ‘When will I start to feel the ‘joy’ you talk about?’
Its impossible to answer for sure because its different for everyone, alcohol may have been masking other problems, so its always worth getting stuff checked out if you’re feeling glum, lacking energy or having physical symptoms such as headaches etc after about 30 days of being alcohol free. If you’ve been drinking for years, your ‘default’ position to cope with everything, from celebrations to commiserations and everything in between, has probably been to reach for a drink, to ‘numb’ any pain or tricky emotion that might try to surface, or to try to ‘elevate’ your party mood when you aren’t really feeling it.
When we take away the poison, everything has to recalibrate and settle. Our nervous system needs to regulate and in time we can come back to a place of ‘balance’ and become more aware of our own thoughts, and emotions and recognise that we can intentionally start to feel better.
Have you ever noticed how some days everything feels lighter, and things just seem to flow, while other days feel heavy and challenging? This is often a reflection of your “vibration”—a term used to describe your emotional and energetic state. In the world of well-being and personal growth, raising your vibration means intentionally shifting your energy to a higher, more positive state. For those of us who suffered guilt and shame about our drinking days, its worth knowing that shame is the lowest vibration!
