As the phrase ‘Sober September’ trips off the tongue so well, maybe you have already considered quitting alcohol for a month. If not, you can start now! The idea of “Sober September” has grown in popularity, much like its January counterpart. It’s often viewed as a chance to hit the reset button, cleanse the system, and maybe lose a bit of that summer weight. (Won’t happen, don’t focus on that) But heres my take on it, if you’re going to stop drinking for one month, why not consider making it a longer challenge?
Now, before you yelp, “Oh, I could never do that,” just pause for a moment and ask yourself – What do you really have to lose?
In truth, the question isn’t about what you lose by stopping; it’s about what you gain. Life without alcohol is life in high definition. It’s more vibrant, more meaningful, and yes, it’s more fun. Sober September can be a fantastic starting point for an alcohol-free lifestyle that could change every aspect of your health, your relationships, and your happiness for the better. If you started Sept 1st, congrats, if you’re still thinking about it…Start Now!
The Myth of Moderation
We’ve all heard the excuses: “I’ll just cut back,” or “I only drink on weekends.” Trust me, I’ve been there. I tried moderation, but the reality is, alcohol has a sneaky way of creeping back in. One glass turns into two, and before you know it, that slippery slope brings you right back to square one. But when you remove alcohol completely, that nagging voice fades, and you gain clarity and freedom. Now, if you provided me with a ‘magic pill’ that might I could drink moderately, and feel completely fine, I wouldn’t touch it even if you paid me. Most people who have been drinking too much don’t have an off switch, they can’t ‘moderate’, but even if they could Why would they want to? Alcohol has ZERO benefits, and even one glass is harmful. There I said it. Listen to my Alcohol Free Life podcast interview with Dr Anya Topiwala for a Psychotherapist /Clinical Lead Researcher view on why alcohol is so bad for us.
The idea of going alcohol-free might sound daunting, but you can do it. It is, in fact the most important thing and the best thing you will EVER do for your own health and wellbeing. I promise you, the benefits are limitless.
It’s not about deprivation, it’s about liberation.
You’re not giving up something, you’re gaining a life full of energy, creativity, and deeper connections.
What Happens When You Quit for Good?
During Sober September, most people notice some immediate benefits: better sleep, clearer skin, and improved mood. But let’s talk about the long-term transformation. Your mental health improves as the fog lifts. You stop numbing emotions and start actually feeling them, yes, even the difficult ones, but through that process, you become more resilient, more present, and ultimately more content.
Your relationships flourish because you’re more present and authentic. You’ll discover hobbies you forgot you enjoyed, and maybe even find new passions. You will get to know (and like) yourself more, imagine that, an end to the self loathing!) and some people find they are actually quite introverted, and highly sensitive, not, in fact the party guy or girl they thought they needed to be, behind the mask of alcohol. You might realize you’re actually funnier and more relaxed than you ever were after a drink or two. Imagine that!
Top Tips to Carry On After September
If you’ve committed to Sober September, fantastic! But why stop there? Here are a few tips to help you keep the momentum going and make sobriety a lifestyle, not just a month-long experiment:
- Stay Connected to a Supportive Community One of the keys to lasting change is connection. Going alcohol-free is easier when you’re surrounded by like-minded people who get it. That’s why I created The Sober Club, a supportive space for anyone who wants to live their best alcohol-free life. You don’t have to do this alone. In the community, you’ll find encouragement, accountability, and inspiration from others who’ve walked this path and are thriving. We become cheer leaders for each other.
- Shift Your Mindset Instead of thinking, “I can’t drink,” change it to, “I don’t want to drink.” Alcohol isn’t something to be mourned; it’s something to be let go of. The social conditioning around drinking is powerful, but once you see through it, you’ll realize alcohol doesn’t enhance your life – it detracts from it. Flip the script and celebrate your decision!
- Fill Your Cup (Literally and Metaphorically) You know my mantra: ‘Keep the Ritual, Change the Ingredients’ Create new rituals that make you feel nourished and uplifted. Try alcohol-free drinks that taste just as satisfying as your old favourites. There are so many amazing options out there now, from kombucha to botanical spirits. But more than that, focus on activities that “fill your cup.” That might be yoga, reading, singing baking, journaling, (All the ‘ings’ just not drinking) or just spending time with people who uplift you.
- Educate Yourself Knowledge is power. The more you learn about the impact of alcohol on your body, mind, and spirit, the easier it becomes to let go of it. Listen to inspiring podcasts, read books, and join workshops that help you stay motivated. The Sober Club offers tons of resources to keep you informed and inspired. It’s important to know the logic around alcohol, but also to feel inspired and motivated.
- Practice Self-Compassion Quitting alcohol is not always easy. You may face challenging moments, but instead of judging yourself harshly, practice self-compassion. For many years we’ve numbed everything out with alcohol, so when its no longer the ‘crutch’ we do have to ‘feel all the feels’ but that’s ok, we can accept the emotions, and know that ‘This too shall pass’. Be kind to yourself as you navigate this new journey. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and every day without alcohol is a victory. If you slip up, don’t give up, just keep moving forward.
- Focus on Holistic Sobriety Think of quitting alcohol as laying the foundations for optimum wellbeing. I’m not suggesting you radically overhaul your diet and lifestyle in the first few weeks, in fact you may get some sugar cravings (its normal) and the most important thing to focus on is NOT drinking. However if you see your challenge as one of getting healthy then clearly, toxic poison can’t have a role in that, so do everything you can to support the transitory phase. Balance the brain chemistry with real food, good nutrition, no fasting or faddy diets, you need lots of protein and good fats, get the right supplements, and of course good sleep and time in nature. Get my low cost beta course on Holistic Sobriety and change your mindset to everything that will be improving!
